2018 MacKenzie Lecture Saturday Workshop

Exploring Media and Religion in Interaction

Stewart Hoover will introduce, contextualize and lead a discussion among several research presentations on the Saturday morning workshop.

The topics will focus on the following areas:

  • How digital media are being used by young Muslim women to promote feminist ideals through such things as fashion, lifestyle, and self-help advice
  • How a leading International Evangelical megachurch uses modern media, popular music, and corporate franchising to remake the meaning of church for millions of young people across the world
  • How media forms such as political cartoons, celebrity culture, and professional sports have become today’s American “civil religion”
  • How religion has re-emerged in European ethno-nationalist and anti-immigration politics and its connections to the “Trump phenomenon” on this side of the Atlantic
